Dr. Capitano completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Winnipeg in 1989, and then went to complete his B.Sc. (Human Biology) and Doctor of Chiropractic degrees from the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago in 1993 and 1995 respectively. While attending the National College of Chiropractic, Dr. Capitano studied acupuncture, physical Therapeutics and Flexion Distraction Technique, completing certification in all three areas. Evidence supports the use of physical activity to modify anxiety and depression levels of individuals experiencing long-lasting psychological disturbances. Habitual exercise has been shown to be an effective and accessible strategy to positively affect both depression and anxiety. Exercise can be self-administered and has fewer negative side effects compared with medication; therefore, researchers have explored the efficacy of exercise in alleviating depression symptoms compared with traditional medication.
There is voluminous evidence that risks of remaining physically inactive, especially in those with chronic disease, are substantial. The new ACSM exercise preparticipation health screening recommendations emphasize the important of regular physical activity for all and seeks to remove unnecessary barriers to adopting and maintaining a structured exercise program, a lifestyle embracing habitual physical activity, or both. The risk for acute exercise-related cardiovascular events is highest among habitually sedentary individuals with known or occult CVD who perform unac- customed vigorous-intensity physical activity. Hence, the ACSM risk classification system described above for exercise preparticipation health screening guidelines focus on assessing 1) the individuals current level of physical activity, 2) presence of signs or symptoms and/or known cardiovascular, metabolic, or renal disease, and 3) desired exercise intensity.

Sprint interval training (SIT) is also referred to as high‐intensity interval training or HIIT. It is of major importance that health care professionals make sure that the general public, as well as many contemporaries, get thoroughly educated about the superior health and fitness benefits of SIT, or “burst” training, as compared to low‐ to moderate‐intensity continuous training (LMICT). This is because, despite research to the contrary, most people still believe that to develop a healthy heart and to lose weight, the best mode of exercise is long and continuous “cardio” exercise, which, inherently, requires a significant investment of time. And, of course, lack of time is the number one excuse given for not complying with an exercise program.
High-intensity interval training (HIIT), defined as alternating periods of high-intensity exercise (85% or higher of maximum heart rate) followed by rest intervals, continues to be one of the most popular exercise trends worldwide. It is important to note that rest intervals do not necessarily mean resting or inactivity, but can include periods of less-intense exercise (e.g., low-intensity resistance sets) and active recovery (e.g., dynamic stretching).
